Estella

What to Know

After crossing the bridge at Puente la Reina, the Camino continues through quiet countryside until it reaches the historic town of Estella. Known as "Estella la Bella" (Estella the Beautiful), this town has long been an important stop for pilgrims.

Estella grew in importance during the medieval period because of its location on the Camino. King Sancho Ramírez of Navarre actively encouraged pilgrimage through the town in the 11th century, helping it become a center of religious and economic activity. The town is home to several historic churches and monasteries, including the striking Iglesia de San Pedro de la Rúa, which sits above the town with beautiful Romanesque architecture.

Estella also has a strong connection to the Camino through its pilgrim hospitals and its role in supporting travelers. Even today, the town maintains a warm welcome for those walking the Way, with narrow streets, historic buildings, and a peaceful atmosphere that invites reflection.

Key Highlights: • Historic town with strong medieval pilgrimage roots • Home to beautiful Romanesque churches, including San Pedro de la Rúa • Actively supported by King Sancho Ramírez in the 11th century • Important stop with a long tradition of caring for pilgrims • Known as "Estella la Bella" for its beauty and historic charm

Pilgrim Reflection

Estella reminds us of the power of intentional support. Just as this town was shaped to help pilgrims, we too can create space in our lives to support others on their journeys — whether physical, emotional, or spiritual. Sometimes the most meaningful parts of the Camino are the places that quietly help us keep going.
